Teach. Learn. Explore.

Hello everyone, before anything else I want to introduced myself. I am Mikee Murao from Saint Louis University Baguio City, Philippines. I am taking up Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in English. I am currently on my fourth year of study. I am one of the exchange students from Batch 6 of SEA-Teacher Program of SEAMEO. I was exchanged to Lambung Mangkurat University Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan Indonesia. I was assigned to teach in SMK Negeri 4 Banjaramsin. I spent the whole month of August teaching and exploring the city of Banjarmasin. You will be able to see my month long experience as an exchanged student.

Being far away from my homeland is not quiet easy. It's my first time to be far away from the place where I grew up. But after I had experienced going to different place I realized that sometimes opportunities comes outside your home. Being in a different country means embracing the culture, values, and traditions. I fell inloved with the beauty of Indonesia. I thought it was really different but when I was there I felt like I'm not really far away from home. I realized that there are similarities of Indonesian and Filipino.

The reason why the teacher teach English in Bahasa because the students can easily understand it. As for my observation, the students were having a hard time speaking in English but they can understand what you are saying to them. They will response but with the basic English they know. The teacher will present the topic and ask questions to the students and give them activities to do in order for the teacher to assess the students learning. There is a democracy inside the classroom. Students has the freedom to ask, share their ideas and learn.

PEDAGOGICAL CONTENTS

1.1 Teaching Methods

The teacher used lecture method, wherein  it is useful for presenting an organised body of new information to the learner. To be effective in promoting learning, the lecture must involve some discussions and question and answer period to allow trainees to be involved actively. There are time that the teacher id using demonstration lesson wherein she is discussing at the same time showing what is she doing or applying what she is doing.

1.2 Learning Materials and Innovations

The English subject has its own manual entitled "Bahasa Inggris". Grade 10, 11 and 12 has their own manual. The content is depending on what grade level are you in.

OBSERVATION ON TEACHER(S)

Planning for Teaching

When my cooperating teacher planned for her lesson, she make sure that her lesson is appropriate for the type of students she have. The topic that she will teach was about Procedural text. Based on the students she have which is the Cooking Class the materials she prepared was very appropriate enough for the students to follow the discussion.

Preparing Lessons and Materials

She then prepared the materials such as the ones used for making a coffee. The materials and ingredients were already prepared. She will be teaching the students how to make a coffee using Procedural Text.

Teaching in Class

The teacher starter the lesson with a prayer. She then presented the topic and the objectives of the lesson. She motivates the students first before proceeding with the discussion. She defined what is a procedural text and how it is used or when it is used. For her example she demonstrated how to make  a coffee. She do it properly. She then asked questions to the students asking if they followed the discussion.

Measurement and Evaluation

She used formative assessment in her lesson. To measure or assess if the students understood the lesson, she gave a short quiz, multiple choice based on the reading text. She encourage the students to ask questions and clarifications. Measurement and Evaluation is important for the teacher to assess the students and for the students to know if they really understood the discussion because if not they will be having a hard time.

TEACHING PRACTICE

Procedures of Teaching

The topic given to me was about Invitation. I taught in the Grade XI Beauty class. The approach I used here was Scientific Learning. The method was Problem-Solving.

Procedures:

Pre-Activity

  • Greet the students and ask the student’s how they are.

  • Ask the prayer leader to pray before starting the class.

  • Check student’s attendance.

Apperception

  • Has anyone of you ever gone to your friend’s party?

  • How did they tell you about their party?

Motivation

  • Benefits of the lesson.

  • Learning objectives of the lesson.

Giving Direction

  • State the basic competence and indicators of the lesson.

While-Activity

Observing

Group the students into six and give each group a puzzle pieces and let them complete it.

Questioning

After completing the puzzle pieces, ask the students’ the following questions:

  • What is written in that paper?

  • What do you think is that all about?

  • What do you think is our topic for today?

Exploring

Using a chart, let the students fill the missing parts of the invitation.

Associating

Why do we need to do or make an invitation?

Communicating

Discuss the generic structure of invitation and let the students share their ideas.

Post Activity

Reviewing

  • What have we learned today?

  • What is invitation?

  • What are the two types of invitation?

Evaluating

Instruct the students to make their own invitation for the opening of a beauty parlor.

Reflecting

Which activity did you enjoyed the most in our today’s lesson?

Closing

It’s nice to see you everyone, see you next week. Sampai Jumpa Lagi

Time Management and Organizing Activities

Pre-Activity- 15 minutes

While-Activity- 80 minutes

Post-Activity- 40 minutes

Each class has three section for one day once a week. One section is 45 minutes multiplied by 3, that's a total of 135 minutes. I need to divide it by three making sure that I can finish my discussion intended for that day. Above is the summary on how I manage and oraganize my time.

Problem-solving

The problem I encountered during this time is that I need to minimize my time because the classes were shortened. What I did is make my instruction short and simple. Make my discussion simple and I reduce or omit some questions from my original plan.

Classroom Management

The class I handled was very cooperative and they participate very well. They listen to my instructions and discussions. They had fun doing the activities I prepared because I made sure that it is within their interest.

Everyone meet my Cooperating Teacher Ibu Inayah Noor and my Supervising Instructor Ms. Rizky Amelia. Because of their guidance, support and kindness, I am very much thankful to them because they help me survive my practicum. I am beyond grateful to this two beautiful Ibu.

SUMMARY AND SUGGESTIONS

Purpose of the Practicum

The purpose of the practicum for me is that it enables me to develop my teaching skills and pedagogy. It allows me to explore the culture and traditions of Indonesia. It allowed me to gain a broader regional and world view. I learned and realized a lot of things. I had the best experience during this program.

Procedures of Practicum

1st week- Class Observation

2nd week- Teaching Assistant

3rd week- Teaching in Classroom

4th week- Reflection and Lesson Learned

Outcomes of Practicum

I can say that the practicum period was both tough and enjoyable. As a teacher, teaching in another country there are problems to be encountered but  I believe there will always be a way and a solution. I enjoyed teaching in SMK Negeri 4 Banjarmasin. I realize that no matter how prepared you are there will always be changes before you execute your lesson, and I learned that ass a teacher I should always be prepared for any circumstances that I might encounter in the future. I can say that the Practicum period was very successful because I survived.

The Challenges of the Practicum

Teaching in another country was never been easy. Language barrier is the very first challenge I had experienced. I never thought that the strategy I prepared for the first time was a fail. I saw how the students stared at me because they can't really understand what I am saying. As a teacher I realized that  I should have a lot of patience in my pocket, keep my passion burning and dream big and trust my students that they will learn  from me.

Overall Impression

One month of being in a foreign country is very challenging but enjoyable. Despite of the circumstances I experienced, with the help of my teachers and buddies, I survive the practicum. It was indeed a success because who would have thought that I can, and I did!

Suggestion for Future Improvement

This program is very memorable experience. Pre-service teachers will be able to enhance their English skills as well as to develop their social skills. I hope that next time a lot of countries will be joining this program, because it will be a great opportunity for other nationalities to prove themselves and  that they can excel outside their country also.

In this section you are going to see my life in Banjarmasin. Together let us explore my teaching experience, meet the people I met, eat the food I tried and see the beautiful places in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan Indonesia.

WEEK ONE

(August 6-10, 2018)

During my first week of teaching, I introduced myself on the first day in front of the staff, teachers and students after their flag ceremony. The Vice- Headmaster Ibu Erika Yolanda welcomed me in the school. My cooperating teacher Ibu Inayah Noor introduced me to the Headmaster of the school. The Headmaster welcomed me and he is very happy to see me. Despite of the language barrier we had, I saw how happy he is based on his facial expression. He said that after I my teaching schedule I am free already.

After I met the headmaster of the school my cooperating teacher introduced me to every department of the school. Here are some of the photos I took with them.

I was able to tour around the school and meet some of my students. I saw how happy the students are and they were very excited to meet me. I was invited to some of the teachers class to introduced myself to their students. I introduced myself to them and the students asked some questions about the Philippines. They were very amused by how I look because one of my student said that I look like an Indonesian.

Some of the teachers invited me during the practicum of the students. I was so happy to try the food that the cooking class was making. They are making "Siomay". The Hotel Class are making mixed drinks. I was able to try the students output.

WEEK TWO

(August 13-17, 2018)

During the first day of this week a socialization program was held at the school by the Members of the Indonesian Regional Representative Council (DPD) to preserve the regional culture. It was initiated by South Sumatra DPD delegate, Drs H Muhammad Sofwat Hadi. The program includes Banjar traditional dances, special songs performed by the students and 41 kinds of rice cake. After the program I was invited to eat lunch with the teachers and guest speaker.

I had my first teaching during this week under the class of Mr. Rudiansyah Yardi at Grade 10 Seni (Art Class). The topic that I taught was about saying Congratulations, how and when? It was memorable for me because I experienced how the language barrier changed my prepared lesson plan. I realized how important to practice the theories you learned in school. Even if the students were having a hard time following and understanding the lesson, I saw how much they tried based on how they answer the questions I raised to them.

I had my second teaching under my cooperating teacher Ms. Inayah Noor S. Pd at Grade 11 Seni (Art Class). The topic I taught was about Asking and Giving Suggestion. The class was very cooperative with me and they enjoyed the activity that was given to them.

I had my third teaching under Dra. Hj. Fitriana Lestari at Grade 12 RPL Class (Software Engineering Class). The topic that I taught was Present Perfect Tense. As I entered the class, I saw how excited the students are. They are very cooperative and they are listening attentively.

I was also invited by the English Club Coordinator Ms. Marlina, S.Pd. to speak at the weekly meeting of the English Club. I met the students and they are very happy to see me. They first introduced themselves and later I was ask to introduced myself in both in Filipino and English language. The students ask about the Philippines and my life. I had fun being with them.

WEEK THREE

(August 20-24, 2018)

During this week I had my fourth teaching under Ms. Marlina, S.Pd. at Grade 10 and at Grade 10 Boga Class. The topic I taught was Expressing Intention. I observed that the students were attentive and participated during the discussion and activities.

WEEK FOUR

(August 27-31, 2018)

During the first day of this week. I had may farewell speech after the flag ceremony. I tried giving a speech to all of them in Bahasa. I seek the help of my buddy and my teachers. Based on the reaction of the students I believe they got the message. After that the Headmaster Drs. Syafruddin Noor, M.Pd handed me a token. I was amazed and I did not expect that they have something for me. All of the students bid their farewell to me. Teaching in their school was very amazing. The staff, teachers and students are very accommodating and kind. Everything must come to an end, but I believed that someday I will meet them again. They gave me memorable experience to treasure. I am very grateful to everyone in the school. They will never be forgotten, they will always stay in my heart.
